Gancaohu Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section lies in the Gancaohu area, about 45 km northwest of Xinge’er, Heshuo County, Xinjiang. It was named by E. Norin in 1935.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandstone. Composed of sandstone, grit stone and sandy conglomerate, occasionally intercalated with pyroclastic rock. In the east segment of Kiziltag, it consists of light-gray and dark purple silty sandstone, quartzose siltstone and conglomerate, 300−1100 m thick; in the areas from the west segment of Kiziltag to Yeyungou, it is dominated by black and gray-green slate, phyllite, siltstone and sandstone, ~200 m thick. The thickness decreases from east to west.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable contact with the underlying Upper Devonian or Proterozoic gneissic granite
Upper contact
Conformable contact with the overlying Yeyungou Fm
Regional extent
Distributed in the eastern part of the South Tianshan subprovince and along Kiziltag to Halik Mt.

Brachiopods Dielasma sp., Dictyoclostus sp. and Spirifer sp.; gastropod Euomphalus pentangulatus as well as corals, Ammonoids, etc

Depositional setting
It is interpreted as littoral-neritic clastics.
